John Burroughs was an American Naturalist and nature essayist and active in the early Conservation movement0. He was less of a scientific naturalist than a literary naturalist with a duty to record his own unique perception of the natural world. Burroughs was born on April 3, 1837 on the family farm near Roxbury, New York. He became a prolific writer compiling the Complete Writings of John Burroughs which consisted of 23 volumes. Burroughs closest friends included Theodore Roosevelt, John Muir, Walt Whitman, Henry Ford, Harvey Firestone and Thomas Edison.
His works and strong belief in a “Living Earth”, greatly influenced a young Aldo Leopold . He died on March 29, 1921 and is buried in Roxbury, New York.
